GTA 6 pre-loading starts on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, and you’ll need up to 212GB of free space. On PS5, the pre-load opens at midnight local time. On Xbox Series X|S it opens at the same moment worldwide, 12 a.m. GMT, which is 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Monday, November 9 in the U.S. The game itself unlocks at local midnight on Thursday, November 19. Rockstar confirmed the details on November 3. Below are the exact times, what to delete to make room, and what the “physical” box actually contains.
Rockstar’s announcement, as reported by VGC and GamesRadar+, reads: “Digital pre-loading on PlayStation 5 will begin on Tuesday, November 10 at midnight local time in your respective time zone. On XBOX Series X|S, pre-loading begins globally on Tuesday, November 10 at 12 a.m. GMT.”
Here’s how that works out in U.S. time zones, using IGN’s regional breakdown:
| Time zone | PS5 pre-load | Xbox Series X|S pre-load |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 12 a.m. Nov. 10 | 7 p.m. Nov. 9 |
| Central | 11 p.m. Nov. 9 | 6 p.m. Nov. 9 |
| Mountain | 10 p.m. Nov. 9 | 5 p.m. Nov. 9 |
| Pacific | 9 p.m. Nov. 9 | 4 p.m. Nov. 9 |
| London (GMT) | 12 a.m. Nov. 10 | 12 a.m. Nov. 10 |
Outside North America, PS5 pre-loads roll out at local midnight, so players in New Zealand and Australia get going first. On Xbox, the single global start means players in Asia and Australia get a mid-morning start on November 10. For example, IGN lists 9 a.m. in Tokyo and 11 a.m. in Melbourne.
This is actually earlier than first planned. Rockstar’s June pre-order announcement said digital pre-loading would start November 12. Rockstar has now moved it up two days for digital buyers.
GTA 6 launches globally at midnight local time on November 19 on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. According to IGN’s breakdown, that means 12 a.m. ET on November 19 in the U.S. On the West Coast that’s 9 p.m. PT on Wednesday, November 18. Sony’s GTA VI support page also lists midnight local time on November 19 for the PS5 release.
The game is only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. Rockstar hasn’t announced a release date for any other platform.
Rockstar says the pre-load file “will require up to 212 GB depending on your device, so make sure you’ve got ample space to begin pre-loading as soon as possible.” The PlayStation Blog tells PS5 owners to clear a minimum of 212GB. Keep in mind that the pre-load size and the final installed size aren’t always the same, and day-one patches can add more on top.
That’s a big chunk of a console’s storage. The Xbox Series S ships with a 512GB SSD, and the original PS5 has 825GB, and part of both drives is reserved for system software. If your drive is full of other games, here’s how to make room:
Pre-loading only works if you’ve pre-ordered, either digitally or by redeeming a code from a retail box. Sony’s support page suggests these steps on PS5:
If you share a PS5 with family, Sony also recommends enabling Console Sharing and Offline Play so other accounts on the console can play the game. On Xbox, the same rules apply: pre-order on the account you’ll play on, keep the console online, and leave enough free space.
This catches a lot of buyers off guard. Rockstar says code-in-box versions “should be available from retailers beginning November 12.” Sony’s support page is clear that these boxes “will only contain a game download code” and that “a disc will not be included in the box.” So if you buy at a store, plan on a big download either way. Picking up the box on November 12 or soon after still gives you a week to pre-load before launch.
Those prices come from Rockstar’s pre-order press release. On PS5, upgrading from the Standard to the Ultimate Edition is only available through PlayStation Store.
Rockstar is also giving away a printable GTA 6 cover art poster and map of Leonida as a free download on its site on launch day. A double-sided printed version will be sold on the Rockstar Store shortly after launch for $0.99, or included free with any Rockstar Store purchase.
If your internet is slow or you have a data cap, the early pre-load helps a lot. Starting November 10 gives you nine days to finish the download, so you could let it run overnight in rest mode. And if your console is hooked up to a smart TV, now is a good time to look at turning off smart TV tracking (ACR) while you’re in the settings.
On PS5 it starts at midnight local time on November 10. On Xbox Series X|S it starts at 12 a.m. GMT on November 10, which is 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on November 9.
Rockstar says the pre-load needs up to 212GB, depending on your device.
No. The pre-load just downloads the game early. It unlocks at midnight local time on November 19.
No. According to Sony, the code-in-box version only contains a download code. Retailers should have it starting November 12.
Not at launch. GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, and Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC release date.
