The Biggest Storylines From This Year’s Gold Gloves

Nine first-time winners

For the second straight year, almost a full lineup’s worth of players won their first Gold Glove. The 2026 first-timers are Bibee, Young, Durbin, Walls and Duran in the American League, and McLean, Perdomo, Chourio and Carroll in the National League. According to MLB.com’s rundown of the winners, Walls led all shortstops with 21 Defensive Runs Saved and became the first Rays shortstop ever to win the award, while Young is the Mariners’ first winner at second base since Bret Boone won three straight from 2002 to 2004.

Nolan McLean makes history as a rookie pitcher

The Mets right-hander is the first rookie pitcher to win a Gold Glove, per MLB.com. He joins Ron Darling (1989) as the only Mets pitchers to win it, and he’s the club’s first winner at any position since Juan Lagares in 2014.

Boston’s outfield keeps collecting hardware

Wilyer Abreu won in right field for the third year in a row, and Ceddanne Rafaela repeated in center. MLB.com notes they’re only the third set of outfield teammates to win Gold Gloves in consecutive seasons, after Barry Bonds and Andy Van Slyke with the Pirates and Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn with the Red Sox. Abreu led all players with 28 Defensive Runs Saved. Add third baseman Caleb Durbin, a first-time winner after joining Boston just before spring training, and the Red Sox finished with three winners.

The champion Brewers go two-for-two

Days after Milwaukee won its first World Series (you can read about the Brewers’ championship parade here), second baseman Brice Turang and left fielder Jackson Chourio both won. MLB.com reports they were Milwaukee’s only two finalists, so the club converted both. Turang’s 23 Defensive Runs Saved ranked second in baseball behind Abreu, and Chourio, 22, led NL left fielders with 13.

Walker and Olson reach four

Christian Walker won three straight with Arizona from 2022 to 2024, and his fourth is his first with Houston. Matt Olson also has four (2018, 2019, 2025 and 2026). The Associated Press highlighted the pair as this year’s leaders in career Gold Gloves among the winners.

Arizona’s three winners

Catcher Gabriel Moreno won his second Gold Glove, and MLB.com says he’s only the second catcher to win a Gold Glove and a batting title in the same season, after Joe Mauer. Shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and right fielder Corbin Carroll both won for the first time, which gave the Diamondbacks three winners to tie Boston for the most.

Pete Crow-Armstrong repeats in center

The Cubs center fielder led baseball with 26 Outs Above Average on the way to his second straight Gold Glove, per MLB.com. Teammate Alex Bregman also won at third base, the second Gold Glove of his career.

How Gold Glove Winners Are Chosen

Each team’s manager and up to six of his coaches vote for players in their own league, and they can’t vote for their own players. Rawlings also folds in the SABR Defensive Index, a stats-based measure from the Society for American Baseball Research, which makes up about 25 percent of the total. The two utility winners are picked a different way, using a SABR formula and other defensive stats.
